Progeria (Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome)

What is it?

  • It is an extremely rare progressive disorder that causes people to age rapidly.

  • Its a genetic condition that is rarely inherited because carriers do not live to reproduce.

  • Those that are born with it live to about their mid teens or early 20's

Symptoms

  • Slow growth and hair loss begin in the first year or 2.

  • Appear short in height
  • Wrinkled skin
  • Enlarged head
  • High-pitched voice

Interesting facts

  1. Mental development isn't affected. Their intelligence tend to be average or above average.

  2. Those that have Progeria age at a rate 8 to 10 times faster than normal.

  3. Don't develop common conditions of aging. For example cataracts or osteoarthritis


Treatments

There is no cure for Progeria but there are medications to help delay progression.
