Heroin

What is heroin?

  • Heroin is a highly addictive and illegal drug derived from morphine and is made from poppy plants

  • Heroin is primarily white but can also be a brown powder, or a black sticky substance known as black tar heroin

  • You can inject, snort, or smoke heroin

  • The most common way of taking this drug is through injection

Short-Term Effects of Heroin

  • The first time heroin is used, the user feels extraverted, is able to communicate with others very easily, and may experience a sensation of heightened sexual performance

  • Users get a rush of euphoria while taking heroin

  • Users report that their hands and feet get very heavy, they have a dry mouth, they're conscious and then semi-conscious, warm feeling of the skin, clouded mental functioning, and sometimes they vomit

How it Works
  • The actual high that users seek when taking heroin only lasts a couple of minutes

  • After the effects of heroin fade, the user becomes drowsy and their heart-beat and breathing slow down

  • After the effects wear off, the user's body physically craves more. If they do not do heroin again they will begin to experience withdrawal

  • Withdrawal symptoms include restlessness, aches and pains in the bones, diarrhea, vomiting and severe discomfort

  • Once addicted to heroin, the user needs more and more amounts of heroin just to feel "normal"

Long-Term Effects of Heroin

  • Users experience depression, insomnia, muscular weakness, cold sweats, inflammation of the gums, constipation, weakening of the immune system, coma, inability to achieve orgasm, introversion, liver or kidney disease, collapsed veins, and lung complications after using heroin for a while

  • Street heroin, which is heroin cut with other drugs, often contains dangerous chemicals that can clog blood vessels leading to the lungs, liver, kidneys, or brain, causing permanent damage

  • Sharing needles with others and having impaired judgment from drug use can increase the risk of getting infectious diseases such as HIV and hepatitis
